My First Collaborate

This has been an interesting week. I have been told over the past year that the Collaborate conference was more Oracle focused and little interest in MySQL. While the conference is Oracle focused, MySQL and open source technologies do have people's interest. I was informed that the MySQL sessions all had larger attendees than last year overall. I did meet some great people here and a big thank you to the IOUG, OAUG, QUEST for this event.

Some typical comments I heard from attendees about MySQL while at Collaborate:
“SQL Server just does not have the throughput, I know MySQL can do it.”
“Depending on what your application is, MySQL is just better and faster.”

The biggest hurdle for MySQL this week was how to pronounce it: “MySQL” is “My Ess Que Ell” (not “my sequel”), otherwise MySQL was well received.

Collaborate will be in Denver next year so I am surely to attend. I look forward to presenting how impressive MySQL 5.6 is and having more MySQL sessions or a track.

#CLV12 Day 1

A good day for MySQL at COLLABORATE 12. Most of the sessions had good attendance.  Dave and I also got the pleasure of meeting Michael McLaughlin of BYU. He is also an Oracle ACE in Database App Development.

Michael is a support of Oracle and MySQL and I have just recently added his blog to the Planet site.

The Road to MySQL CONNECT

Things are going to be busy over the next few months. I look forward to meeting many of you from the MySQL community over the next few months. I would also like to pass along my thanks for the MySQL Community Award, we (not just Dave and I but everyone here) are just getting started...

April 22^nd -26^th - starts things off for the MySQL Community Team. Dave Stokes and I will be presenting at different two sessions and available in the demo grounds at Collaborate in Vegas.

May 2^nd -- MySQL heads to the big apple for an OTN Developer Day in NYC. Ronald Bradford as well as Calvin Sun are among some of the speakers for this event.

May 7^th -11^th - MySQL will be attending the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Oakland Calif. Tuesday looks to be a full day of MySQL and Ubuntu talks. I am sure many of the topics will be related to MySQL 5.5, MySQL 5.6 DMR , the db forks, and how we can support the Linux Distros in the future.

May 18^th, the Rocky Mountain Oracle Users Group (RMOUG) has included MySQL to take part in their quarterly meetings. The MySQL Community team as well as Ronald Bradford (MySQL Oracle ACE Director )and George Trujillo (Oracle ACE in two different categories one being MySQL) will be in attendance and presenting.

June 5^th and 6^th -- MySQL will be at the International PHP Conference in Berlin.  Ulf Wendel will be presenting 2 great MySQL sessions.

June 5^th -- will also be the MySQL Innovation Day at Oracle headquarters. Get a sneak peak of what’s new and what’s coming from leading Oracle MySQL engineers. If you cannot attend a live webcast will be available for some sessions.

June 8^th – 10^th The MySQL Community team again will join forces at the Southeast LinuxFest (SELF). This time for a MySQL Day and this is looking like it will have a great lineup of MySQL presenters.

June 26^th – 29^th – I will be attending Edmedia, a World Conference on Educational Media and Technology,  in support of MySQL.

July 14^th – 15^th – The Community Leadership summit in Portland Oregon

July 16^th – 20^th -- OSCON 

September 29^th & 30^th – MySQL CONNECT in San Francisco !

RMOUG SIG

A big thanks to the Rocky Mountain Oracle User Group (RMOUG). They have just added MySQL as a new Special Interest Group (SIG).

The first official meeting will be held at the Quarterly Education Workshop on May 18th. This will be at the Colorado Oracle Broomfield offices. We plan on having Ronald Bradford, Dave Stokes, George Trujillo and myself all attending and presenting.

MySQL Innovation Day

I will be attending the MySQL Innovation Day.  Don't just listen to a speech, come and interact with the engineers and the MySQL community!

The event will be featuring multiple “lightning” talks, BOFs with the Oracle’s MySQL Engineers.  If you cannot attend please join us via a live webcast.Some members of the MySQL community will also be invited to give presentations.

This event is being hosted at Oracle’s Conference Center in Redwood Shores, CA on June 5th, 2012.

Register information will be coming soon! This will be a great opportunity to preview some of the content that will be delivered during MySQL Connect Conference in September.

MySQL Connect Conference

MySQL Connect Conference --  September 29 and 30, 2012

Learn about the latest MySQL features, discuss product roadmaps, and ask questions directly to the Oracle engineers behind the latest MySQL code this year at the MySQL Connect Conference.

While you will see some Oracle OpenWorld umbrella branding around it, MySQL Connect is a different event. It is taking place just before Oracle OpenWorld and will have a separate pricing. Registration will open on April 16.

The Call for Papers will also be opening April 16th and the MySQL Community is encouraged to submit. It will only be open for approximately three weeks.

The MySQL Connect Conference will be jam-packed with technical sessions across these six tracks : Performance and Scalability, High Availability, Cloud Computing, Architecture and Design, Database Administration, and Application Development.

As Sarah Novotny was quoted saying in our press release “To have our own 2 day MySQL-focused event in conjunction with this year's Oracle OpenWorld is a testament to Oracle's commitment to listen to, support and foster the MySQL Community."  -- The Press Release for this event is available here.
